In 2004 he was awarded the Australian Federal Government Business/Higher Education Round Table Award for Outstanding Achievement in Research and Development; and Education and training.

In 2003 he was awarded the Australian Federal Government Centenary Medal for Service to International Medical Research and Undergraduate Teaching.
